Non toxic fabric protector: the low down on ingredients

Non toxic fabric protector: the low down on ingredients

We get asked a lot of questions about ingredients in our eco friendly fabric protector spray, and rightly so. Traditional fabric protector sprays contain highly toxic chemicals that have been proven to have a negative impact on our health and on the environment. They are not safe for your family or your pets, this is why opting for a non toxic fabric protector spray is a safer option. But how do they achieve fabric protection without the nasty side effects, you may wonder. Here is the low down on ingredients, what is in the spray and (more importantly) what is NOT in the product. Feel free to read our Ingredients page for more detailed info!
How household products are affecting your family’s health

How household products are affecting your family’s health

Did you know? The average household contains 62 toxic chemicals (source). They usually come in an innocent looking bottle, you can buy it at the supermarket and it sits in your cupboard at home. At first glance, these products don’t appear to be hurting anyone. However, it’s what’s on the inside that matters most. Household fabric protector sprays and cleaning products are the silent sinners, wreaking havoc on our health and the environment. For years, mainstream fabric protectors were praised for their remarkable ability to repel anything from water to wine, dirt and oil. We’ve since discovered that the adverse effects of these toxic stain guards significantly outweighs their value when they contain fluorocarbons, which are believed to be carcinogenic. So much so, that one of them had to be banned a few years ago, when traces of the toxic chemical it contained were found in blood samples of the general population. Protecting fabrics using highly toxic products is coming at a significant cost to our health and the environment. Knowing what’s actually inside the bottle and what each ingredient does to our health is the first step in banishing the bad guys once and for all, and in finding eco friendly alternatives.   The main culprits Until now, the hazardous and toxic chemicals in fabric protector sprays may have simply been words on the back of a bottle that you probably glanced over. Most of us are unable to pronounce these words, let alone comprehend their effects on our livelihood. Keep your eyes peeled for these chemicals: Hydrotreated heavy naphtha Propane, Butane, Isobutane or Ethylbenzen Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane Flammable Aerosole These chemicals, known as PFAS, PFOS or PFC, are manufactured compounds that do not break down. This applies to the environment, and also to our bodies. Exposure to these harmful toxins can lead to their accumulation in our bodies, raising the likelihood of long term health concerns. In tests, 3M gave very high dosages to monkeys, who had convulsions, and to rats, whose offspring died. The main culprits that contain these toxic ingredients are fabric protectors and water repellent sprays, but also cleaning products, paints, varnishes, non-stick cookware and (even more shockingly) personal care products. Other toxic additives include fragrances and carcinogens, which can be problematic for allergy or asthma sufferers.   What they’re doing to you Studies* undertaken on humans with PFA exposure have shown that the compounds could induce the following: Growth, learning or behavioural defects in children Reduced fertility Hormonal imbalances Increased cholesterol levels A weakened immune system Increased risk of cancer Disruption to liver, thyroid & pancreas function Scientists are continuing to study the effects of PFAs on human health, and it’s likely the results will be daunting. *Sources: NSW Government, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, USA Environmental Protection Agency, MLive.com.   Make the change to non toxic products It’s time to detox your home and put your family’s health first! The good news is non-toxic household products exist. Choose water-based fabric protectors and natural all-purpose cleaners that won’t pose a long term risk to you and your family’s health. Contrary to popular belief, eco friendly stain guards are actually more effective and durable than mainstream products containing unnecessary, harmful ingredients. Start making smart choices that will have a positive effect on your future! View our range of non-toxic fabric protectors and start protecting your family, as well as your fabrics.
How to prolong the life of your canvas shoes

How to prolong the life of your canvas shoes

Canvas shoes play a key role in most wardrobes. Pairing them with an outfit is the easy part, however keeping them clean can be a little tricky at times. Canvas is an extremely durable fabric made from hemp, and there’s no reason your latest canvas purchase shouldn’t last you for years to come. Learning how to care for your canvas will prolong the life of your shoes, and will keep them looking newer for longer.   #1 Protecting First things first, protect your canvas shoes! Canvas is naturally absorbent and needs to be treated with a water repellent spray before wear. Our non-toxic fabric protector spray is suitable for use on canvas footwear (and most other shoes and clothing), and won’t alter the look, feel or smell of your shoes. A water-resistant spray is crucial for the longevity of your shoes, and will ensure those rainy walks to work don’t destroy your wardrobe. Bonus points: our fabric protector will also repel any permanent dirt or liquid stains.   #2 Cleaning Like most things, a little TLC every now and then will go a long way. If your canvas shoes look like they could do with a little extra love, take a few moments to give them a new lease on life. Remove any excess dust or dirt Rinse the shoes with warm water Use a toothbrush and cleaning solution of your choice (either bicarb soda and water, or   a mild, eco-friendly detergent) to gently scrub the shoes Rinse and remove excess water Stuff the shoes with paper towel to absorb excess moisture and allow to air dry Remember to toss the laces in with your next load of washing! Our eco friendly fabric protector will continue to work its magic for up to 30 washes, so there’s no need to reapply a coat of water repellent spray after every wash.   #3 Storage We all know the feeling after a long day on our feet, and our first instinct is to kick off the sneakers and leave them for dead at the door. Your shoes are just as excited to be home as you, so give them a legitimate home and escort them there after every wear. Stay on top of your canvas upkeep and enjoy your favourite pair of shoes for longer. The environment and your wallet will thank you! Watch and learn just how easy it is to stain proof your life!
How to pet-proof your home

How to pet-proof your home

There’s no denying our beloved furry friends into our homes. Who can pass up cuddles on the couch, unconditional love and the company of a best friend after a long day at work. It’s all love, fun and games until an accident happens. These accidents will happen from time to time, and more frequently with puppies and kittens learning the dos and don’ts. Banishing your pets to the backyard is not the answer! Pet-proofing your home is simple. Following a few precautions will ensure you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Invite the four-legged members of your family into your home with open arms, without the fear of ruined furniture, unpleasant odours and stains!   1. Protect your furniture with a non-toxic fabric protector Muddy paws can be on the couch in an instant! The best way to prevent permanent marks and stains is to use a fabric protector for your furniture. Our eco-friendly stain stain guard is an ideal sofa protector, and can be used on a range of fabrics including leather, cotton, suede, synthetics, wool and silk. Apply it to your couches, cushions, ottomans and arm chairs, and let the living room become a stress-free environment for all the humans and animals in it! Dirt, drool and any other accidents can simply be wiped away with a paper or a dish towel.   2. Stain-proof carpets and rugs Stumbling upon a little ‘surprise’ in the hallway or on the dining room rug doesn’t need to be the end of the world. Our non-toxic carpet protector spray offers high-tech liquid and stain proofing for your carpets and rugs. Your floors will maintain a natural look and smell, whilst repelling any urine, dirt or stains. Accidents are bound to happen, however the good news is- your carpets will live on long past the treacherous toilet training stage.   3. When accidents do happen: know where to turn! The unfortunate truth is that urine can leave a potent, lingering smell even after many cleaning attempts. Most urine removal products only cleanse the surface, which temporarily masks the smell. We recommend using urineFREE to combat the source of the stain and eliminate it for good. With the best method of stain protection and removal, you can combat bacteria and bad smells from urine in your home once and for all.   4. Free your home from hazards Protecting your pet is undoubtedly the most important part! Ridding your home of hazards, toxins and chemicals will give your pet the best chance at a healthy and happy life by your side. Pick up electrical cords, store all bathroom, kitchen and cleaning products in cupboards that are out of reach and ensure all rubbish bins are secured. By using a non-toxic fabric protector and urine removal product, your pets will be safe from exposure to harmful chemicals. If you regularly use an aromatherapy diffuser in your home, choose your essential oils carefully. Avoid using tea tree, wintergreen, ylang ylang, pine, cinnamon, citrus and sweet birch when your pets are inside. Lavender and frankincense are best for both cats and dogs. Pet proofing your home is essential for the wellbeing of your entire family. With the right precautionary measures and use of a non-toxic fabric protector, you’ll have more time for fun and games, and less stress when it comes to keeping your home looking and smelling fresh. Create an allergy-free atmosphere in your home

Create an allergy-free atmosphere in your home

Your eyes feel like they’re on fire, your core is copping a serious workout from sneezing and you’ve hit the bottom of yet another box of tissues. Sound familiar? With 1 in 3 Australians suffering from allergies, it’s likely it does. Overcoming allergies can feel like a constant battle that you’re never going to beat. Moving to a dust-free planet isn’t an option and neither is living inside a bubble, so there must be a realistic way to surpass the sniffles.Whether you’re a longtime allergy sufferer, an asthmatic or you’re prone to eczema flare ups, it’s important to maintain a home atmosphere that isn’t contributing to your uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous symptoms. It’s easy to blame the cat, the change in weather or the pollen producing plants in the backyard for provoking allergies, however we can often contribute ourselves to the conditions with the use of toxic household products and cleaners. Most people are unaware of the allergens found in most household products. You might think you’re staying on top of dust and mould in your home, however certain ingredients in household cleaners could be releasing allergens into the atmosphere. If your home is clean but your allergies are constant, the products you’re using could be part of the problem. Let’s take a look at the allergy and asthma triggers, products that could be at fault and the best replacements and cleaning methods.   Allergy triggers in the home  Dust Dust is unavoidable in most homes, and while it’s visible on bench tops, shelves and other surfaces, it can build up quickly in carpets and on furniture. Mould Mould spores love damp, humid environments. They’re a pest to get rid of permanently and could be hiding in hard-to-reach places. You could have mould on your carpet without even knowing - read our article to find out how to avoid it! Pollen We can’t stay angry at nature, but the intricate events happening in our gardens could be causing you grief. Pets It’s not them, it’s us… But don't be too quick to ban them from the house!     Products you need to rethink  Laundry detergents  Some laundry detergents contain formaldehyde, which can trigger allergies and asthma.   Fabric softeners & antibacterial cleaners Quarternary Ammonium Compounds (QUATS) are found in these products and long term exposure is known to worsen asthma symptoms.   Glass cleaners The ammonia present in glass cleaners is a powerful irritant for asthma sufferers.   Air fresheners  If you think they’re cleansing the air, you are mistaken! The toxins in air fresheners release a nerve-ending agent that can have damaging effects on your nasal passages. They can also be a nasty skin irritant.   Allergy friendly products    Non toxic fabric protectors Protect your furniture, carpets, rugs and bedding from dust, dirt and mould build-up with a non toxic, water based fabric protector (read more about the ingredients). The invisible, breathable coating allows dust and other triggers to be easily wiped from fabrics, and prevents dust mites and mould spores from nestling their way deep into the fabric’s fibres. Our fabric protector spray is also odour free, so you don’t have to worry about triggering allergies when using the product in your home.   Vinegar Mix a solution of equal parts water and vinegar to create an allergy-friendly window and glass cleaner. It will remove films and smudges, and won’t expose your senses to harmful ammonia. Vinegar is also the best mould remover!   Microfibre cloths Not only are they reusable, but they’re far more effective at capturing dust particles, rather than spreading them into the air.   Essential oils  Dilute your favourite essential oils in a spray bottle and purify the air in your home with natural freshness. Lavender and peppermint oil are great choices for allergy sufferers.   Overall, we recommend opting for eco-friendly carpet and furniture fabric protection, natural cleaning alternatives and ditching any products containing toxins or allergens.   Take care of your home and your family by making smart choices when it comes to household cleaning products. Bedding/mattress protector: why clean when you can protect?

Bedding/mattress protector: why clean when you can protect?

On average, we spend about 33 years of our lives in bed! That’s 26 years sleeping, and 7 tossing and turning trying to fall asleep, or enjoying a well deserved lie in. With so much time spent in bed, and the major benefits of a good night’s sleep on our overall wellbeing, it makes sense to invest in a quality mattress that will guide you through many restful nights. Now for the not so fun facts. Our bodies make about half a litre of sweat and shed nearly a gram of skin while we’re asleep. Not to mention the added stress of overnight accidents when raising toddlers. So whether you have a growing family, you’re renting out furnished rooms in your home, or you simply can’t resist letting your pooch get in amongst the covers, mattress protection is crucial. Cleaning a mattress is as daunting as it sounds, making protection the easiest and most effective approach. Guard all the mattresses in your home against dirt, spills and accidents, and enjoy some shut eye without any stress. Our waterproof mattress protector spray is non-toxic, leaving your family, allergy sufferers and pets safe and sound.   The cleaning process Cleaning a mattress is a tedious task, and depending on the stain, it can often become a lost cause. Vacuuming, deodorising and steam cleaning are the methods generally used to clean a mattress. Treating specific stains usually requires a concoction of household ingredients and cleaners, which are likely to leave behind a lingering smell. If protection wasn’t on your radar until now and you’ve got existing stains to combat, we recommend using urineFREE to remove urine stains and odours for good! Our busy lives don’t leave a lot of time to worry about constant mattress upkeep, especially given there is usually more than one in most households. Make your life simpler and let your mattress live longer with our waterproof mattress protector spray. Why clean when you can protect? The ultimate protection Do you cringe at the thought of a plastic mattress protector or a waterproof bed sheet? Don’t worry, so do we. Thankfully, there’s no longer a need for these dated forms of protection! Our eco-friendly mattress protector spray actively protects your mattress without a trace. Step 1: Test a small area of the mattress. Step 2: Spray the mattress in a back and forth motion until the entire surface is covered. To obtain the best results, try using one of our battery operated sprayers instead of the trigger spray. Step 3: Let the mattress dry for 12-24 hours before making it or sleeping in it. Afternoon naps may need to be relocated to the couch! Step 4: Test the mattress to ensure the ultimate protection. Spray a small amount of water on the mattress, and if small beads appear, the job is done! If not, simply apply an additional coating and wait for it to dry. Our mattress protector spray will prolong the life of your mattress, and give you the freedom to invest in a comfortable and high quality product. It will stay protected for up to 3 years, and will not only prevent damage while you’re asleep; but also during moves, storage or rentals. If your mattress has consumed more coffee than you during Sunday’s ritual breakfast in bed, don’t stress! We’ve got you covered. You can now cut back on your ‘how to remove …’ Google searches after every accident, and simply reach for a cloth instead. Wash your sheets, give your mattress a quick wipe over and forget it ever happened!Explore our website for more details on protecting your mattress with our non-toxic fabric protector spray.

Are Scotchgard pre-protected furnishings safe?

Are Scotchgard pre-protected furnishings safe?

There is no doubt that in today's society the easiest way is the preferred way of doing things. Having your home furnishings pre-protected with Scotchgard before they are installed in your home is easy and convenient, but is having no control over the chemical treatment of your new upholstery worth it?  Read this before you decide, plus find out about a safe alternative to Scotchgard.    Are pre-protected Scotchgard furnishings safe?  First up let's have a quick chat about Scotchgard. After a lot of negative media attention surrounding their original Scotchgard formula containing harmful PFOS, the producers of Scotchgard 3M were forced to make changes to their product. The damaging PFOS were replaced with perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). While 3M claim this new makeup is safe, the fact that PFBS can still enter the bloodstream creates a bit of uncertainty, especially with those trying to maintain a more natural, sustainable lifestyle. Got some big questions surrounding the safety of Scotchgard? Read more here. When it comes to their built-in protection range, Scotchgard and their partners offer the service of pre-protecting your furnishing with Scotchgard before it arrives into your home. Products available for this service include hardwood floorings, carpets, rugs, leather goods and home roofing. There is no doubt that this service is handy, but what’s got us hesitating is the great unknown. Exactly what treatment, and how much are they spraying? The uncertainty still surrounding the safety of their product and having no control over the quantities being applied is enough for us to question if the convenience is worth it. These pre-protected furnishings are not protected indefinitely and require a stain guard to be reapplied after a few years of use or after professional cleaning. This means you would need to ultimately pay for extra Scotchguard post-cleaning or purchase and apply an at-home protection anyway.    A safer alternative to Scotchgard Feeling stressed because you want your home protected from stains and spills but not at the cost of your health? The good news is there is a safe, sustainable alternative to Scotchgard. protectME fabric protection spray is eco-friendly, contains no harmful ingredients and no animal products. Nano water-resistant spray - how does it work

Nano water-resistant spray - how does it work

Nano fabric protection Nano water-resistant sprays: you've heard of them, but you're not sure what exactly they do, or how they do it? Read on! 'Nano' stands for nanotechnology and these sprays, like the protectME range, are the future of fabric protection. More efficient than mainstream fabric protection sprays like Scotchgard, they are also more eco friendly: better for your health and for the planet.   Nanotechnology water repellent spray: how does it work? Nanotechnology is the science, engineering and manipulation of matter at the nanometre level (billionths of a metre). Nanotechnology has made it possible to create extremely tiny structures and new materials capable of solving specific needs, one of which is providing nanoparticle protection. Nanotechnology is an evolving 21st century technology that will change all our lives in the future. Working at microscopic levels, the range of possibilities are endless, whether it be the treatment of disease, environmental cleansing, health or accident prevention, sports performance and security to name a few. Many nanotechnology products and applications are already in use. Nanotechnology coating sprays surpass today’s standards in mainstream fabric guards as they have nanometric qualities that repel any liquid, dust or dirt, protecting textiles from dirt and stains.  Time, money and cleaning costs can be minimised and nanotechnology applications will make certain fabric protection products and methods obsolete in the future. The best part? Nanotechnology’s properties are found in nature and therefore are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and safe to use around humans and animals.   Why nanotechnology water-resistant sprays are better than mainstream fabric guards    1. Higher level of coverage Due to the nano composition of this technology, the nanopolymers when combined with the natural product of silicon dioxide creates a special nano coating spray. When the coating is sprayed on to surfaces the material is rendered hydrophobic and oleophobic; that is, it repels both liquids and contaminants. These include water, oils, other liquids, dirt, dust and stains reducing food sources for bacterial and fungal growth.    2. More cost-effective Compared to competitor products that have been around for years, protectME Textiles’ nano-technological coatings offer greater coverage per m2 at a more affordable price. They also last longer as they are abrasion resistant and UV stable so less repeat applications are required.   3. Environmentally friendly Not only will you be saving money long-term but you’ll also reduce your ecological footprint by using an eco friendly fabric protector such as protectME Textiles.  With protectME Textile application, you will be reducing the number of chemicals commonly found in household cleaners that can harm the environment, often cause health issues and sometimes cause further damage to fabrics and furnishings with their use.   4. Less maintenance & no cleaning Reducing replacement & maintenance costs are easy when you’ve protected your items from stains and damage, using a nano water-resistant spray. Whether it be saving on everyday cleaning products for carpets, clothes, dry cleaning, shoes, indoor & outdoor fabrics or having to pay for re-upholstery, new furniture or clothes to name a few, protectME Textiles will pay for itself in no time!   5. Long-term results Due to the nature of the nanostructure found in protectME Textiles, fabrics & materials with the nano coating spray applied preserve their composition, are more resistant to abrasion & exposure to UV rays and have superior durability for 2 years or more depending on use.   6. DIY application Our nano water-resistant spray is ready to use and can be applied by yourself in the comfort of your home. No need to evacuate the premises as with traditional stainproofing products. protectME Textiles is odourless and is safe to use around humans and pets. Better yet, protectME Textiles will not change the look, feel and smell of your items. Items will cure between 12-24 hours depending on temperature. Spot test Our upholstery and fabric protector is suitable for suede and microfibre couches, however it’s better to be safe than sorry! Apply the product to a small concealed area to ensure it’s colourfast.  2. Coat the couch Spray your suede couch in a back and forth motion until the suede/microfibre is moist. We recommend using one of our battery operated sprayers instead of the trigger spray for large surfaces like a couch or sofa, to avoid wrist fatigue and ensure even coating all over.  3. Brush it gently & wait We recommend using a soft brush straight away after the product has been sprayed on to raise the nap of the suede.  We know you’re dying to sit back and relax on your new couch, but let the sofa protector coating dry for at least 12, and up to 24 hours.  4. Test for coverage Test the protection by spraying a small amount of water onto the couch. If small beads form on the surface, you’re good to go. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3 to guarantee top quality protection.   What if my couch is already a little pre-loved? No problem! Either vacuum or steam clean the couch to remove excess dirt. Alternatively, if you’re looking to reduce your water usage, spot clean with a non-toxic fabric sofa cleaner. Once the couch is clean and you’ve removed all excess cleaning products, you can start with step 1! Finally, it’s time to sit back and relax. Guess what? You can relax for up to 3 years before you need to worry about protecting the couch again. We think that sounds much nicer than the shocking gasp, jump and desperate dash for the cloth and cleaner after an accidental spill. Cleaning a suede or microfibre sofa can be a tedious task, and we aim to make your life easier! Enjoy that new couch, protect it with a product that won’t harm your health or cost the Earth
Mould on carpets and how to avoid it

Mould on carpets and how to avoid it

Mould is stubborn. Once it’s in your home, it never wants to leave. No matter how many times you send it on its way, it reappears, ready to take over once again. Instead of learning to live with the unwanted visitor, it’s best to refuse its entry in the first place! Mould is sneaky. While moisture is no doubt the perfect breeding ground, recent studies (sources here and here) have suggested that dirt is the number one reason for mould on household carpets. Dirt combined with humidity is a recipe for disaster. Moist carpet doesn’t always show its dampness, and the moisture can be trapped below the surface. In other words, mould can appear on carpets and rugs without any major exposure to water or other liquids.   But fear not, mould is stoppable! When it comes to mould on carpets in your home, preventative measures are the most successful. Follow these 3 simple steps to avoid the musty odour, discolouration and the constant combat to remove mould from your carpet!   1. Increase airflow We all know how the humidity can cause us to sweat, and it can have a similar effect in our homes. If you live in a part of Australia that regularly experiences humidity above 65%, it’s a good idea to increase the airflow in your home. You can do so by opening windows and turning on fans, or you can install a portable dehumidifier. If your carpet appears to be damp, you can lift the moisture by using bicarb soda. Simply sprinkle some of the natural cleaner onto the carpet, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then vacuum the carpet as you would regularly.     2. Clean your carpet regularly Given that dirt has been identified as a leading cause of mould, a quick weekly vacuum can go a long way. Use a non toxic, natural carpet cleaner to spot clean when necessary, and consider giving your carpet a steam clean several times throughout the year. Mould is renown for living beneath furniture or in dark corners, so be sure to hit every nook and cranny when cleaning.   3. Use a non-toxic carpet protector Everyday dirt and spills are unavoidable in most homes, so protecting your carpet is crucial for its longevity. A non-toxic fabric protector for your carpet will repel and protect it from dirt and liquids. Our water-based formula is safe to use in your home, and you won’t be exposed to harmful chemicals. The best time to apply carpet protector is once you’ve completed a routine clean of your carpeted surfaces and removed existing stains. You’re then set to spray! For more details on using a protectant, take a look at our ‘how to guide’ here. Rather than being faced with the challenge of removing mould from your carpet, follow these guidelines to keep it mould-free, looking clean and smelling fresh for life.
